The Job Search Continues

I am approaching the 1-year anniversary of my job search. Yes... I've been searching unsuccessfully for a job for nearly a year. Very sad, isn't it? Let me explain... My job with the government was supposed to end last September. So I started searching frantically during the month of March last year. I wanted to get a good head start. After 1 job offer (the pay was ridiculously low, so I declined) and 3 other unsuccessful interviews, I found out that my job had been extended by 6 more months. So the job search slowed down tremendously. By November, I started searching heavily again, only to find out that I had been extended by 6 more months. So here I sit, in the same position I was in one year ago; It's almost March, and I'll lose my job in September. This time the job will definitely end in September.

Over the past year, I've unsuccessfully tried the networking approach, and primarily stuck to job postings on all of the various websites and local newspaper ads. As my profile states, we're wanting to move closer to our hometowns near Bowling Green, KY.

So that brings me to my question that I pose to anybody that might stumble across my blog. What can I do differently to help me land that job? For any professional resume writers out there, please feel free to have a look at mine and make suggestions for changes.

I'm about to give up on the job sites, and try to focus on networking more. I have a few successful friends in the BG area that I hope can help me out. Wish me luck, and anyone that can share pointers, please feel free!

Good luck on the job hunt... I recently went through the same thing, here's my suggestions.

The online job services are worthless. Of the 12 interviews I went on from Monster and HotJobs, one was legitimate. The others were scams.

Networking is good, especially if you're wanting to get back to your home area... Look up your old buddies and see what businesses have moved in.

Make sure to sign up at the personel offices. If you have a security clearance from your government work BE SURE to list that. The fact that I was cleared COSMIC meant that my prospective employers didn't have to shell out the cash for it.

The biggest thing I can tell you to do though is get a headhunter. Save up the money for it now. It's well worth it. Although I don't necissarily think that the job market is shakey right now, I do think that the trend has been downwards for salaried professionals. A headhunter will be able to match you up with a job which also meets or exceeds your salary baseline.

Take care, found your site through BE...

Just get an entry level job, basically 2005 is the same as 1985, this is what happens when Republicans are in office, no good jobs.

Find a company that you want to work at and get in as whatever you can, and then network to the group you want since most companies will move you internally before hiring outside.

Good Luck!
